Remove the supply line from the underside of the toilet. RELATED: Solved! What to Do When the Toilet Won’t Flush STEP 2: Remove the supply line. Some may also choose to soak up the residual water inside the bowl with a towel. This won’t likely get all of the water, but it’s possible to get most of it. Next, use the plunger to push as much of the water remaining in the toilet down and into the drain pipes. Hold the flush lever down until the tank empties as much as possible. Turn that valve clockwise until the tank no longer refills after flushing. Typically, there will be a braided steel hose running from the bottom of the toilet tank to a valve on the wall. The first step to change a wax ring is to shut off the water supply. STEP 1: Shut off the water supply and drain the toilet. Otherwise, a standard wax ring should work. When replacing toilets, if the floor flange and drain pipe are any more than ¼-inch lower than the finished floor, use an extra thick wax ring. Anytime someone pulls (removes) a toilet from the flange or is replacing a toilet, they have to replace the wax ring in order to ensure a tight long-lasting seal.īefore you begin removing a toilet, it’s also important to decide what size wax ring is required. If the toilet is wobbly, the floor flange is probably broken and needs to be replaced, which requires removing the toilet. If those areas are dry and secure and water is still collecting around the toilet base, it’s probably time for a toilet wax ring replacement. If there is water pooling around the toilet, be sure to check the water supply line going to the back of the toilet as well as the gaskets between the toilet and the tank. The base has 2 bolts which isn't enough to secure if floor is not level even with a level floor with linoleum, rocking will occur always use silicone to 'glue' toilet to floor. We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to and affiliated sites. The water reservoir is designed to flex a little (having larger gaskets) to compensate for movement of people sitting on it and resting backward. If the floor is uneven in an area, which is too wide to fill with silicone, shim it with a man-made material shim, snap off and then apply silicone. I prefer to have a line that I don't see, not white silicone that will collect dust/debris over time. If floor is white, lighter color, tiles, white silicone works. I usually do one side of the toilet base at a time. If there's a gap where there wasn't enough silicone applied, reapply more and repeat in that area. 'Finger' silicone in one sweeping motion, making sure you wet finger with damp rag that has denatured alcohol in it. Have a cloth and denatured alcohol handy. An inch is sufficient enough of a weep hole. Always leave a little area at the base of toilet in back, by the wall free from silicone so that leaks will be revealed, if there is a leak in the future. Silicone will hold toilet to floor, preventing rocking. Before applying 100% silicone to base of toilet, where it meets the floor, flush toilet a couple times and watch base for water. Reinstall washer/nuts water feed line not to over-tighten. The toilet should sit a small bit above floor, held up by wax ring press down and work toilet until it sits on floor. Lift toilet and place, making sure bolts come through bottom plate holes. Remove all caulking/silicone from floor and clean off toilet bottom ridge. Install new on bottom of toilet, or place on waste hole on floor (sometimes wax ring on floor will help hold bolts vertical makes for better seating toilet attempts). Remove old wax ring (by hand but wearing gloves). Store in large contractor black garbage bag. Unscrew water line at tank, not at wall shut off valve. Lift toilet, will be heavy-can move it as a unit, won't damage if you lift by bowl and back lower area of bowl. If caulking around base, cut with box cutter. Wet/dry vacuum out (after removing filter in vacuum) remaining water in bowl and in reservoir. r/DIY now has a Discord channel! Come chat with us!ĭid you miss the AMA with Patrick DiJusto?
